Microneedling has become one of the most popular treatments for improving skin texture, reducing scars, and rejuvenating the face. With its growing popularity, many people are curious about the procedure—but the question that often comes up is: Does microneedling hurt?
If you’ve been considering microneedling but are hesitant because of the perceived pain, we will break down what you can expect during the treatment, how it feels, and how to minimize discomfort. We’ll also touch on how the healing process feels afterward, so you know what to expect before, during, and after your session. When all is said and done, we know you will be obsessed with your glowing results!
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure in which tiny, sterile needles are used to create "micro-channels" in the skin. These tiny punctures stimulate the body’s natural healing process, which promotes collagen and elastin production, leading to smoother, firmer, and more youthful skin.
Microneedling is commonly used to address skin concerns such as:
Fine lines and wrinkles
Acne scars
Stretch marks
Enlarged pores
Uneven skin texture
Hyperpigmentation
Does Microneedling Hurt? The Sensation Explained
So, does microneedling hurt? The short answer is: It can be uncomfortable, but most people don’t find it unbearable. Ready for some good news? At Sparkle, we apply topical numbing cream to the treatment area for about 30 minutes before starting treatment. The sensation of microneedling varies from person to person and depends on several factors:
The area being treated - some areas of the face or body are more sensitive than others
The needle depth - deeper needles may cause more discomfort, and no- they are nothing comparable in size to the ones used at your yearly check-ups ;)
Your personal pain tolerance
What Does Microneedling Feel Like?
Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect during a typical microneedling procedure:
Before the Treatment: Numbing Cream
Most professional microneedling treatments involve the use of a topical numbing cream to help minimize discomfort. The numbing cream is typically applied to your skin about 20-30 minutes before the procedure begins, allowing it to fully take effect. Our groovy numbing room is perfect while you're waiting to start your procedure: adult coloring books and candy included! The numbing cream will ensure that you experience minimal discomfort during the treatment. When the numbing cream is applied, you may feel a mild tingling or cooling sensation on your skin. When it comes to numbing cream at Sparkle, que the church bells because we are in LOVE with using this topical pre-treatment for an array of procedures.
During the Treatment: Mild to Moderate Sensation
Once the treatment begins, you may feel a slight prickling or scratching sensation as the needles move across your skin. The sensation is often compared to the feeling of sandpaper or a cat’s tongue. It's usually tolerable for most people, but it can feel a bit more intense in areas with thinner skin, such as under the eyes or on the upper lip. Deeper treatments, such as those used for acne scars or stretch marks, can cause a bit more discomfort, but the numbing cream will help minimize the pain.
After the Treatment: Mild Sensitivity
Post treatment, you may feel a slight stinging or sensitivity for a few hours, similar to the feeling you get after a mild sunburn. This is completely normal and typically subsides within 24 hours. Some redness or inflammation is common, especially on the first day, but it usually fades within a few hours to a day.
Factors That Affect How Much Microneedling Hurts
While numbing cream can alleviate much of the discomfort, there are some factors that can affect how much pain you might experience during your treatment:
Skin Sensitivity: People with sensitive skin or those who have recently undergone treatments like chemical peels might experience more discomfort during microneedling. However, the numbing cream should still make it bearable. Speaking of chemical peels, we offer our Sparkle & Shine Packages, which can include 2 SkinPen, 2 Hydrafacials, and/or 2 VI Peel treatments for a brag-worthy complexion and radiance!
Needle Depth: Shallow treatments, typically used for general skin rejuvenation, cause less pain than deeper treatments used for scar revision, stretch marks, or severe wrinkles. For deeper microneedling, the discomfort is usually more pronounced, but the treatment is still very tolerable with numbing.
Treatment Area: Certain areas of the body and face are more sensitive to microneedling. For example, the under-eye area and lip area are more delicate, so these regions may feel more "spicy" during the procedure compared to other areas like the cheeks or forehead.
Pain Tolerance: Everyone’s pain tolerance is different. Some people may experience more discomfort than others, but it’s important to note that most patients describe the treatment as more of a mild irritation rather than intense pain. It is also important to note that for females that your pain tolerance is lower during your menstrual cycle. It may be best to avoid treatment around your cycle to alleviate potential discomfort.
How to Minimize Discomfort During Microneedling
While the procedure is generally well-tolerated, there are a few ways to minimize discomfort during your microneedling session:
Topical Numbing Cream: As mentioned, most microneedling professionals apply numbing cream to reduce discomfort. At Sparkle, the numbing is included in your treatment cost/time for your appointment!
Use a Lower Needle Depth: If you’re sensitive to pain or nervous for your first treatment, talk to your provider about using a more shallow needle depth for your treatment. If your goal is general skin rejuvenation rather than targeting deep scars or wrinkles, then this is the best option for you anyways!
Distraction Techniques: Some people find that distracting themselves during the treatment (such as chatting with the practitioner or listening to music) can help take their mind off the sensation. If you haven't experienced the distractors we have at Sparkle Aesthetics, you are in for a treat!
Stay Relaxed: Tension can make any procedure feel worse. Try to stay relaxed and take deep breaths to help you stay calm.
Nitrous Oxide: If your anxiety and nerves get the best of you, we understand and you are not alone! Getting treatment can be scary sometimes! We offer Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) as an add-on service if you feel that you need a little something extra!
What to Expect After Microneedling: Healing and Aftercare
While microneedling doesn’t usually cause significant pain, you might experience some post-treatment effects. Here’s what to expect:
Redness and Swelling: It’s normal for your skin to appear red and slightly swollen right after the procedure - much like a mild sunburn. This usually subsides within a few hours to a day.
Dryness and Flakiness: As your skin heals and produces collagen, you may notice some dryness, peeling, or flaking within a few days. This is a sign that the skin is renewing itself.
Sensitivity: Your skin may feel more sensitive to touch and products for the first few days, so be gentle with your skincare routine and avoid harsh exfoliants. Avoid direct sunlight for 48 hours. It is highly recommended to wear a high SPF that is safe for your skin. Ask your provider for their recommendation of which SPF is best for you!
No Makeup for 24 Hours: It’s recommended to avoid wearing makeup for at least 24 hours after your microneedling session to prevent irritation and allow the micro-channels in your skin to heal properly.
Final Thoughts: Is Microneedling Worth the Discomfort?
While microneedling might cause some mild discomfort during the treatment, it’s generally considered to be very tolerable—especially with the use of numbing cream. The benefits including smoother skin, improved texture, and a reduction in scars and fine lines, far outweigh the temporary sensation of the procedure. Plus, any discomfort typically fades within a few hours to a day. If you're still unsure about microneedling, book a complimentary consultation with one of our experts.
